Gaelic Glasgow’s classic macaronic (mixed-language) song which perfectly sums up the culture clash of the mid-20th century Highland arrival in the city, mixing the comic with the darker undertow. At that time, a huge proportion of the Glasgow police were Highlanders and Islanders, with a high probability of being Gaelic speakers to boot, so the ‘get-out-of-jail (this-time)’ card was a quite likely scenario. I loved listening to Skye singer, Archie Grant, belting this out on the radio when I was wee, but as I grew up, fewer and fewer singers were up for singing funny songs as the audiences who could follow and enjoy them declined. I started singing this a long while back as much to amuse myself as anyone else. A younger generation has since re-encountered the art of the comic song, which is a wonderful thing!
